A Solid State Drive (SSD) is a plug-and-play storage data storage device that uses solid state memory (no moving parts) to randomly access data. SSD drives use DRAM to store, read and write application data.

Benefits of Solid State Hard Drives
SSD drives are very durable and endure shock, vibration and variable temperatures unlike conventional hard Disk Drives (HHD) that use mechanical parts. With no moving parts, Solid State Drives are also relatively silent (unless a cooling fan is used). The main difference to HDD’s is that SSD storage medium is not magnetic or optical (like a CD, DVD or BluRay disc) but solid state semiconductor.
This allows a speedier start-up time than a disk and faster random access time for reading/ writing. Because the data can be randomly accessed and does not rely on a read/write interface that you get with a spinning disk. Further to this, SSD drives contain their own CPUs to manage data storage delivering faster performance than conventional rotating hard disks.
